Fight Over 'Little Pink Pill' Raises Sexism Questions http://www.hisandherhealth.com/245-frontpage/677-fight-over-little-pink-pill-raises-sexism-questions http://www.hisandherhealth.com/245-frontpage/677-fight-over-little-pink-pill-raises-sexism-questions

It’s called the “little pink pill,” a tiny tablet that could have a huge impact on treating female sexual dysfunction. If it’s approved, it would become the first drug of its kind on the market.

But that’s a big IF.

The drug Flibanserin is locked in a heated battle for approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, raising controversial questions about why there are so many sexual enhancement drugs available for men and zero for women.

January 8, 2014--We’ve been following the development of a drug called Flibanserin, also called by some “pink Viagra,” since 2010, when its developer shelved it after hitting a bump in the road to FDA approval. Several years later, we were talking about alternatives, Librido and Lybridos, which were moving forward with clinical trials (and have not yet been approved).

(CNN) -- For about a month, Barbara Gattuso felt at least 40 years younger.

Gattuso, 65, had enrolled in a clinical trial for a drug aimed at women who have low sexual desire. There is no treatment available in the United States for boosting the female sex drive, but women like Gattuso hoped that would change with this experimental medication, called flibanserin.

  • WISH that women who suffer from sexual dysfunction be respectfully evaluated for the best course of treatment, whether medical or psychological, not dismissed.

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA, April 6,2011)) sheds new light on taking estrogen. Here is what it means to you.

Estrogen versus Estrogen and Progesterone and Uterine Cancer

Like all medications, estrogen is a powerful hormone with benefits and risks that have to be weighed and personalized for each woman. Forty years ago estrogen was so popular and considered so beneficial that almost all women were encouraged to take it from the time of menopause until death. Unfortunately, it was found that estrogen alone can cause cancer of the uterus. Women who have had a hysterectomy and had their uterus removed don’t have this problem.

Then researchers discovered that women who take daily estrogen combined with progesterone for at least 10 days of the month did not get uterine cancer. There were some risks of blood clots and strokes, but overall it was believed that estrogen plus progesterone protected the uterus from uterine cancer and estrogen helped to prevent heart disease. The heart disease part of this changed with more research.

There's a report in the British Medical Journal on sex and aging and health.  There were some genuine surprises, but the bottom line is that middle- and older-age men and women who perceive themselves to be in very good health are more likely to be sexually active. Researchers analyzed interview data from two nationally representative samples of some 6000 U.S. adults aged 25 through 85.

As a clinical psychologist and sex therapist, I have devoted many years to helping people open and feel alive, both emotionally and physically. I myself have walked the same path I assist others in traveling every day. It is clear to me that when we are disengaged from any part of ourselves, including our sexuality, our hearts and bodies close in response. When we close, we stop evolving, and we no longer live and love to our fullest potential. Our lives lack creativity and joy, spontaneity and humor. As a culture, we have supported this unfortunate process in each other by ignoring the realities of our sexual instincts.
